How it works
Net metering is achieved by allowing a customer's meter to spin in the reverse and forward directions. When the customer's photovoltaic or wind generation system is producing less energy than the customer is using, the electric meter will measure the energy passing from the utility to the customer and spin in the forward direction. When the customer's photovoltaic or wind generation system is producing more energy than the customer is using, the electric meter will measure the excess energy passing from the customer to the utility and spin in the backward direction. The surplus energy is subtracted, or "netted," from the energy supplied by the utility to the customer, thus "net metered." In many cases, the customer's existing electrical meter can be used for net metering. Information on New York State's program, including rebates and incentives, can be found at www.powernaturally.org.
Eligibility
New York State law requires that net metering be offered to residential customers (including time-of-use customers) who install photovoltaic systems with nameplate ratings up to 10kW or wind systems with nameplate ratings up to 25kW, and farm customers who install farm waste systems with nameplate ratings up to 400kW, and are interconnected with the local utility.
Billing
Information about billing can be accessed here.
If you are not eligible for net metering, there are many other options available to offset your usage. Please see our electric rate tariffs for more information.
